Crafty Goods – 6/13/14

Summer Hair

It’s almost summer! I mean, it feels like summer, but it’s not official yet.
Still, I have tomatoes growing, pansies peeking, and oregano getting bold! I’m so inspired by the Share Denver garden!

Sadly, I won’t be able to revel in all its green & growing glory – It’s a busy weekend!

Here’s what’s on my radar:

-Our pal Donna Diddit recently shared a link for the New York Maker Faire and I got excited thinking how cool it would be to have Colorado makers with their booths at this phenomenal event! Why don’t you apply? They are seeking makers and performers and the deadline is July 20th. You have plenty of time to get your act together!

-Did you hear that Taylor Swift is a cross stitcher? Well, she is and she made a super cool, Drake inspired needlepoint project for her friend Ed Sheeran. Take a peek here to see her work!

-So, no big deal, but yeah…we were invited back to TEDxMileHigh! Not only do they have their incomparable presenters every year, but the Exhibit Lounge is always a blast. With representation from great businesses and creators in Denver, it’s going to be a hoot! So, get a ticket and come see us! Come see all of it! There’s guaranteed inspiration up in that piece!

-As if there weren’t enough going on this weekend…it’s also Denver Comic Con weekend! We’re so excited that Denver will be awash in cosplay and major nerdery, but we know for a fact that there are some crafty vendors sharing their wares this year! If you don’t have tickets you might be out of luck, but if you’re one of the lucky ones, go get your nerd on and support your local vendors!

-And last, but certainly not least, Share Denver‘s got some super fun classes happening this weekend! Sterling is teaching her newly restructured Tarot 101 workshop and I’m teaching this crazy easy Beaded Plant Holder on both Sunday and Monday (just in case you’re wrapped up with Comic Con all weekend!).

Get out and explore this weekend, Denver! There’s so much to do!

Grommets

Beaded Plant Holder

After a heck of a lot of fun this weekend, it’s time to get back to work!
I’m working on a collaboration that requires grommets and piles of nylon webbing – it’s exciting to work with new materials.
Also, project testing for a class I’ll be teaching at Share Denver in June! I had a semi-disaster with an oil paint pen. But it’s kind of pretty, right?

What are you working on?!
New batch of beer brewing? Did you stain your porch over the weekend? Are your poppies blooming? Did you make any amazing family recipes for the holiday?

What Are You Working On?

Let’s get this week started!
It was a pretty darn productive weekend at Ninjas HQ!
And it got me thinking – I like to share what I’m working on…but what are YOU working on?

Here’s a sample of the stuff I cranked out this weekend:

Crochet Washcloth

Squirrel Cross Stitch

Brussel Sprout Embroidery
So, seriously, what are you working on?
It doesn’t have to be crafty…it can be some construction project in your backyard, the start of your garden, or starting giant pot of kimchi!
Share it here, on your Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter and hashtag it #WAYWO

Can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to!

Embroidery Residency!

Our friends at 3 Kings are the best! They always take good care of us and for that we are forever grateful.
Jim Norris is always amenable to our variety of schemes and he’s just an all around good dude that loves Denver and the South Broadway neighborhood. It’s my hood too…so, that makes it that much more awesome to work with him.
So, when Jim and his partners took over the Mutiny Information Cafe and was open to the Denver Craft Ninjas taking over for an embroidery residency, well,  we were thrilled to death!

So, we’re doing it! Learn the basics of embroidery with Denver Craft Ninjas!

We’ll intro and discuss tools for embroidery, teach 8 embroidery stitches (including the French Knot) and demonstrate methods for pattern-making, special tips, decorative techniques, and more.

We’ll begin with the basics and provide everyone with a doodle cloth for practice and then move on to stitching a tea towel!

Skills taught in class:

  • Basics of hand embroidery and tools used
  • Types of floss & threads /organizing floss/separating floss
  • Eight embroidery stitches
  • Pattern transferring

Supplies included in class fee:

Embroidery hoop, Doodle Fabric, Embroidery Floss, Embroidery Patterns, Needles, & Tea Towel

There are a couple of ways you can get involved!
First,  you can join us for all four of the classes:
The price is $40 for all 4 classes at 7 PM every Wednesday in the month of April. Click here to register!
Second, you can come to individual classes! For $12, you’ll get that class’ individual benefits and we’ll make sure you get all the the materials too! Click the individual dates to register – Wednesday the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th

Stitchers are welcome – all levels of ability! (However, we do ask that any kiddos that come are at least 10 years old) Come sit a spell with us and stitch with us over coffee!

And thanks tons to Mutiny Information Cafe for sharing their cool space with us! See you soon!

Craft Ninjas vs. Hand Printed Tea Towels

Weather can throw a wrench in any good plan! Sadly, we had to cancel our first date for this great project.
So many people had signed up and were ready to stamp their hearts out. One Ninja was excited to come before her baby was born and we were excited to see her! (Leslie was born on March 7th – Congrats Rachel!)
Alas, a really good snow storm came in and, with safety in mind, we cancelled our February project and made it our March project.

But you can’t keep Denver Craft Ninjas down! We waited it out and invited more Ninjas to jump in and we made up for our missed date with some serious crafty work!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This project is so easy to crank out! And there’s lots of room for you to flex your creative muscle and try a variety of techniques in creating your own stamps.
The materials are so darn easy too! Grab some craft foam, spray adhesive, cardboard, fabric paint, and some fabric and get busy! Share your pictures with us if you do try this project – we’d love to see what you’re up to.

As usual, we couldn’t do what we do without Jim and 3 Kings Tavern! It’s a great place that supports its community on Broadway. We’re tickled pink to be a part of it all!

We want to mention how psyched we are to have our super-intern Amber back in Denver! Expect to see more of her hanging out with us!

Now, seriously…keep your eyes peeled for our April project. It’s going to be unprecedented and we’re crazy excited to share it with you! STAY TUNED!

Hand Printed Tea Towels

We’ve always been a family of people who love dish towels.
My mom can’t leave a craft fair without loading up all the embroidered tea towels and then slowly working her way through them at home.
They’re handy! And the cuter they are, the more fun they are to use.

So, that’s our project plan for February! Hand printed tea towels will make your kitchen a little bit brighter.
Join us on February 24th – from 1-5 PM at Three Kings Tavern for some serious hand printing of your own designs!

This project is $20! And we ask that you pre-register for the event via this link so that we can have all the materials ready for you.

We’ll provide three white tea towels, craft foam to create your very own stamps, and fabric paint. You can go wild decorating and when you’re done, you can take home your pieces and use them or share them as gifts (because they make perfect gifts)!

Hope to see you there!
